Peter van Wijngaarden is an ophthalmologist and scientist with interests in retinal and neurodegenerative diseases. He is Deputy Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne. He is Clinical Director and co-founder of KeepSight, a national digital eye screening reminder system for people with diabetes.


Professor van Wijngaarden's PhD was in retinal angiogenesis at Flinders University of South Australia. He completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Cambridge in the field of central nervous system remyelination and has led the Ophthalmic Neuroscience Laboratory at CERA since 2013. His team has expertise in retinal imaging and biomarker discovery. Key research focus areas include hyperspectral imaging, multimodal imaging, and biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease. His research has led to the development of a medical technology spin-out company, and he is a named inventor on several patents.
